Why should you pay child support for a child that is not your own?
Posted Tuesday, January 31, 2006 1:12:15 PM by Rose Martins

Child support is usually determined by the courts of law, who state who needs to pay who and how much. Child support

The amounts to be paid are calculated according to certain pre-determinded guidelines.

If the parties fail to make the necessary payments that have been enforced by a court of law, legal action can be taken.

But what happens in a case where the children that you always thought were yours, are actually biologically somebody elses. What if during the divorce the courts tell you that you are required by law, to carry on supporting these children?

A Texan man discovered by accident that 3 of the 4 children he thought to be his own, were actually the children of another man. He applied to the court of law to be relieved of these child support payments that were eating up almost all of his salary.

His request was denied. The courts ordered him to carry on paying child support for children that were not his own.

A measure to suspend the drivers' licenses of habitual nonpayers of child support received legislative support Wednesday. The House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee unanimously approved HB15, sponsored by Rep. Julie Fisher, R-Fruit Heights. The measure authorizes the state Office of Recovery Services to order the suspension of the driver's license of an individual in arrears on his or her child support. Fisher ran a similar bill last year in an attempt to address the $325 million owed in back child support payments. A December 2005 legislative audit recommended license suspension as a tool to encourage payment in specific situations. "This bill is not the silver bullet, but it provides a credible threat to those who can pay but who choose not to pay," Fisher said....

A Toronto man who is currently serving a four year sentence for conspiracy to commit murder on his wife is trying to use his incarceration as an excuse to get out of child support payments. Ironically enough, that's actually the very same reason why he attempted to kill his wife in the first place after he admitted to trying to hire a hit man to break his wife's neck and throw her down the stair's. He was arrested in December after he arrested in a sting operation by police and plead guilty. Now Ronald Schulz says that since he is in prison, he no longer has access to a steady income which makes him unable to pay for the child and spousal support. The argument was in court this week and the initial decision was for the now ex-wife of Schulz to receive a lump sum from the $98,000 he received for selling his house in order to help raise their two children which she is currently raising on her own....

A Dauphin County judge hopes peer pressure on a massive scale will help make those who are late on child support pay up! Child support slackers on a newly published list have essentially fallen victim to a three strikes and you're out policy. They failed to show up for a conference. The missed out on an amnesty week in September when they could have come forward and paid without penalty, and they missed a court date. Now there are warrants out for their arrest. "Last year we collected over $46 million in child support payments in Dauphin County. But we're not doing the best job we can if there's one name on that list," says Judge Jeannine Turgeon. So what happens when there are 171 names on that list? Dauphin County Judge Jeannine Turgeon goes public....

Just weeks following the reported fist fight with another Member of Parliament, Kennedy MP Kenyatta Gibson has found himself entangled in what could be another contentious matter, this time involving allegations of a death threat coupled with a paternity suit filed by a woman claiming to be the mother of his five-year-old son. Before appearing in court No. 2 on Bank Lane with her attorney Bobby Cooke-McIver, the woman, who asked to remain anonymous, alleged that her relationship with the Kennedy MP began in 2000 when Gibson lived in Freeport, Grand Bahama. She claimed that a son was later born out of their relationship, but when the relationship failed, a long court battle began in Freeport to obtain child support monies. She was forced to file the matter in the capital so that swift action could be taken....

Renovated school buildings 'long overdue'

My youngest child graduated from Jim Hill High School in 1982, so I have no children in the Jackson Public Schools. I am going to vote for the bond issue because I feel it is crucial that any community maintain and support its public schools. We cannot see to it that the children attend school, study and do their homework. That is the responsibility of parents. But we can provide decent physical facilities for them. Jackson cannot thrive, maybe not even survive, without public schools and an educated work force. Many of the buildings are in deplorable condition. It behooves the citizens of Jackson to do everything they can to maintain and improve our public schools. Even though I must not be as smart a voter as Tom Lestrade (" 'Nothing to' JPS bond issue plan," Oct, 6 letter), I thought the information given was straightforward and reasonably specific....

Madonna: I offered to support adoption baby in Malawi
Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 2:53:11 AM by Blog57 Team
Pop star Madonna said Wednesday that the father of the Malawian baby she hopes to adopt declined her offer to support the child if he grew up in his homeland. The music legend was also adamant that she would not be seeking to adopt 13 month old David Banda if she thought he had been receiving regular visits from his family at the orphanage where she found him. Madonna provoked storms of criticism when she flew the child out of Malawi to London last month. A coalition of Malawian rights groups is now mounting a legal challenge against her adoption move. In an interview with BBC television on Wednesday, she denied media reports that the toddler was visited regularly at the orphanage by his father and grandmother. Asked if she could have left him in Malawi and supported him there, the star said: "Yes, I offered that option to the father and he declined....

Child support totals break records

It was a record year for child support collections in the state of Alabama, with collections totaling $281 million in 2006 fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30. The total broke last year's record of $272 million. Locally, child support collections totaled $3,038,133 for Covington County, an increase of $107,000 from last year. Cathy C. Leverington, director of the Covington County Department of Human Resources, said parents have a legal obligation to provide financial support for their dependent children. "This money helps to meet the basic needs of children," she said. "It may make some families less likely to have to go on governmental assistance. "It increases the standard of living, and could mean the difference in a child's life, like participating in a extracurricular activity," she said....
