Child abuse - a horrific offense
Posted Monday, January 30, 2006 9:17:33 PM by Rose Martins

Child abuse is not a pretty picture. You read and hear stories of how a child's been abused that literally leaves your hair standing on end. Statistics are relatively high dispite child abuse laws that are aimed at preventing child abuse offenses.

Child abuseThe most horrifying aspect of many child abuse cases and the prevention thereof, is that often the abuser is someone close to the family, making it difficult to perhaps prevent. Not every child abuse victim will recover. Some wait until adulthood to deal with being a victim of abuse and some just never quite recover.

Internet content security companies are now joining the fight against child abuse by means of integrating the Internet Watch Foundation's (IWF) Child Abuse URL List into its Content Security Gateway (CSG) product for ISPs.

The internet is a popular tool of child abusers, allowing them easy access to child porn sites and children who are innocently using the net. CSG incorporates ultra high-speed scanning technology that is designed to monitor up to 250,000 web page requests every second, check target sites against the IWF list, and decide whether to allow or block access depending on the result.

HARRISBURG - Gov. Rendell on Wednesday signed a package of bills intended to toughen penalties for sex offenders who prey on children, including a measure that would make changes recommended by a Philadelphia grand jury that investigated abuse by Roman Catholic priests. The legislation would give alleged victims of child-sex crimes until their 50th birthdays to file criminal complaints, 20 years longer than current law allows. Employers and supervisors could be held criminally liable if they know of alleged abuse by employees who care for children but they fail to stop it, and caregivers would have to report suspected abuse regardless of whether the victim reports it. The grand jury recommended legislative reforms in a September 2005 report that documented alleged assaults on minors by more than 60 priests in the Philadelphia Archdiocese since 1967....

A mother accused of aggressively shaking her baby has been charged with felony child abuse. Joanna Ramirez, 23, was charged Tuesday in 4th District Court with a second-degree felony of child abuse/neglect for allegedly shaking her 6-week-old baby boy to make him stop crying. She was granted a court-appointed attorney as she was unable to pay for her own, according to a financial affidavit she filled out in court. When Ramirez took the baby to the hospital on Oct. 13 she told police who were called to investigate the child's injuries that the baby had fallen off the bed on Sept. 25, according to a police report filed in 4th District Court. However, when a doctor at Primary Children's Medical Center told her about the lacerations on the right frontal lobe of the baby's brain, Ramirez changed her story, according to the police report....

Victims of child abuse lured thru text messaging

PERPETRATORS of child abuse have become more wily, using the latest technology to victimize vulnerable minors. According to Dr. Irene Baluyot, associate director for research and publications of the Child Protection Unit (CPU) Network, there has been an alarming increase in the number of child abuse victims lured through text messaging. We never thought there would be a trend like this three years ago, Baluyot told the Inquirer in an interview during the Child Abuse Prevention Year launch at the Asilo de San Vicente de Paul in Manila yesterday. Baluyot said the perpetrators usually got the numbers of their victims -- usually teenagers -- from television programs featuring text chat rooms or through random text messaging. The victim would then meet up with her textmate -- who she thinks is a fellow high school student -- and end up being abused by an adult male, said Baluyot, a child protection specialist at the Philippine General Hospitals Child Protection Unit....

Child abuse may alter victims' brain chemistry, study shows

CHICAGO - A new study on monkeys raised by abusive mothers suggests that growing up in an abusive household can alter brain chemistry in a way that makes some youngsters prone to mistreating their own children when they grow up. In other words, abuse is not just something that's learned from living with abusive parents, although that may have an influence, according to authors of the report, published in Thursday's issue of the journal Behavioral Neuroscience. Suffering through abuse also appears to permanently lower the brain's production of an important regulator of emotions called serotonin, said Dario Maestripieri, the study's lead author and an associate professor at the University of Chicago in comparative human development. Low serotonin can make people more prone to acts of rejection, impulsive aggression and violence....

MONTGOMERY, Ala. Police have arrested a couple and charged them with abusing the man's seventeen month old baby son. Police said the child suffered several beatings but should recover. Jake Ducote and his live-in girlfriend, Tiffany Taunton, brought the baby to the Jackson Hospital emergency room. Doctors didn't believe the couple's story that the boy had fallen through a window in a French door. He had fractures on both sides of his head and on the back of his head. He also had bruising on his face and ruptured blood vessels in his eyes. Officers questioned Ducote and Taunton.
